Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayana is once again wooing the television audience with a touching narrative. The show airs on India’s premier GEC StarPlus and generates interest among viewers. Its beautiful rendition with soul-stirring music is a favorite watch of the age group of people in Indian groups. Renowned music composer, lyricist and playback singer – Ravindra Jain devoted himself to making music for the mythological saga. It is a little known fact that Ravindra Jain was the only creator in the mind of the show’s producer Ramanand Sagar to compose music for the Ramayana.
Prem Sagar, son of Ramanand Sagar shared, “Composing music for the Ramayana was the most challenging task when making the series. When Ravindra Jain landed in Mumbai, he came to Sagar Villa for the first time to meet my father and sang the song ‘ung ghungroo ki baja baaja laga ke’. Famous as Dadu, he was a true master. Humming to a tune often elicited words from his mouth. My father, Ramanand Sagar, had thought of none other than Ravindra Jain when we started work on the Ramayana. They were both like two bodies with one soul. Extensive research was done to make music by relevance. Notable singers like Suresh Wadkar, Kavita Krishnamurthy graciously cut their payments to be part of the Ramayana. ”
Both Ramanand and Ravindra Jain did a lot of research to perfect the musical element in all aspects. Even instruments were carefully selected – dholak was chosen instead of tabla, the shehnai was used instead of the shehnai to ensure the authenticity of the melodies.
After Doordarshan, the mythological legend of Ramayana airs only on StarPlus at 7.30 pm daily.
